What to wear to your Family Photo Session

One of the most frequent questions I get asked regarding a Family Photo Session, is what to wear. Here is some tips I give my clients:

  • First and foremost, dress in something you’re comfortable in! The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable you’ll look in your photos.

  • Mama’s, it can be really helpful to choose what you want to wear first and then build the rest of the family’s wardrobe off of that.

  • Coordinate, don't match. There are rare occasions where everyone in the same color works, however generally you want diversity in colours and patterns.

  • Choose 1 pattern and 2-3 different solid colours in a colour scheme. The pattern should have at least 1 of the solid colours within the design.

  • Avoid neon colours, as they often reflect on the skin of the wearer. You don't want to have a bright orange or yellow face.

  • Ladies, I always recommend clothing with movement – think flowy dresses, skirts, or scarves. These add another beautiful visual element to your photos.

  • Pay attention for clothing with distracting logos or words and very thin stripes (this can cause an unwanted visual effect in your photos).

  • Dress in layers. Layers add interest but also allow for removing clothing if it gets warm. Think scarfs, vests, cardigans, tights, blazers, jackets....

  • Don’t be afraid to incorporate statement pieces – jewelry, hats, etc!

  • Create a Pinterest board for inspiration and ideas.

Below, I have posted some great colour palattes I've seen online, that might give you some guidance or inspiration when preparing for your own session.
